Nine of the Best Podcasts About True Crime

I have to admit, I am a huge fan of true crime, and I'm not the only one. In 2021, Adweek observed that there has been a "dramatic increase" in interest in the true crime genre. If you are just getting into true crime, or are just looking for a new podcast, here are some of my recommendations.

1. Morbid

Aunt and niece duo Alaina Urquat and Ashleigh Kelly go in-depth on the most interesting true crime cases. Ashley is a hairdresser and Alaina is an autopsy technician. Together, they take a lighthearted approach to talking about cases, while still remaining serious and being respectful of the victims when appropriate. Their passion for the cases they cover and love for each other comes through the speakers.

2. Crime Countdown

This is another podcast by Alaina and Ashley. (Can you tell I love them?) In Crime Countdown, produced by Parcast, Alaina and Ashley give the top ten of a specific category of true crime. Some examples include "Deadly Cults", "Black Dahlia Theories", or "Florida Man Crimes". If you are interested in true crime but don't have time or energy to listen to all the gory details of one case, this podcast could be for you.

3. Disappearances

Another Parcast original podcast, Disappearances is a podcast with Sarah Turney, who used TikTok to "help bring justice to her sister Alissa's nearly two decades-long disappearance." Because of this, she is passionate about other cases of missing people. She is also very respectful for the victims and their families, and asks permission before speaking on each case. If you are interested in true crime, but hate the gore or murder aspect, this could be good for you.

4. Big Mad True Crime

Heather Ashley tackles the most popular to the lesser known cases, but does it in a shorter timespan. Other true crime podcasts can be an hour or more, but Big Mad True Crime is quicker and succinct, usually being between 25-40 minutes long. She starts off every podcast with "Small talk sucks, so let's get into it." This podcast is for those who love true crime but don't have a lot of time.

5. My Favorite Murder

My Favorite Murder stars lifelong true crime fans Karen Kilgraff and Georgia Hardstark. These comedians find a true crime story that fascinates them and tells it to each other. If you're interested in a more comedic podcast, it is definitely funnier than some of the others on this list.

6. Serial

If you are interested in a more story-based podcast, Serial is for you. This podcast follows one story per season, and there are six seasons to listen to. Host Sarah Koenig speaks of the plot and characters wherever they turn. The catch is, she doesn't know what happens in the end until she gets there. If you would rather have an experience with one case, Serial is definitely the podcast to listen to.

7. Crime Junkie

Crime Junkie, hosted by Ashley and Brit, is for everyone obsessed with true crime. The girls cover murdered victims, missing people, serial killers, mysterious deaths, infamous cases, and more. If you would define yourself as a crime junkie, then you know where to go.

8. Murder, Mystery, and Makeup

Murder, Mystery, and Makeup started out as a YouTube series by Bailey Sarian. With its increased popularity, she made it into podcast form and started uploading it to wherever you can find podcasts. Because of this, there is both a visual and audio version of this podcast. If you prefer to watch videos over listening, you should check this out. Bailey's sunny personality and beautiful makeup tones down the horror of some cases she covers. Plus, if you end up watching it on YouTube, it feels like a friend is talking to you about a case.

9. Wine and Crime

Finally, Wine and Crime is hosted by three childhood best friends from Minnesota, Kenyon, Lucy, and Amanda, as they drink wine and talk about true crime. I really enjoy that the girls post reference pictures of their cases on their website. If you're curious like me and like to have a face to the name (but also lazy like me and don't feel like Googling yourself) this is a great tool. All the girls have a great dynamic that makes the podcast incredibly enjoyable, even when the subject matter gets a little dark.
